THIS AMERICAN LIFE: TOM GIRLS (PART 1 OF 2)

"Tom Girls" segment from This American Life, episode 374: Somewhere Out There. Hosted by Ira Glass. Part 1 of 2.

Lilly and Thomasina have a lot in common. They're both 8 years old. And they were both born boys, although it became clear pretty early on that they'd prefer to be girls. There aren't all that many kids in the world like them, but recently, at a conference in Seattle on transgender parenting, they met. And they immediately hit it off. They could talk about things with each other that they'd never been able to share with other friends back home. And that's comforting, even if they never see each other after the conference ends. Producer Mary Beth Kirchner tells the story. Rebecca Weiker is associate producer of the story.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE: TOM GIRLS (PART 2 OF 2)

"Act Two: Tom Girls is a powerful and touching story of two 8 year old transgender girls, Lilly and Thomasina, who become friends and their parents attempts to find them a place where they can strive and be happy. This made me cry for reals, especially as one of the fathers is a complete asshole." http://bit.ly/HXCtLU

Henree ft. Nikka - French Pop Song

Makes me wonder why we have not heard of Nikka (or her manager, who seems to be getting top billing, which also seems wrong!)

The last acceptable bigotry?: How cultural ignorance is killing trans Americans

LGBTQ activism has achieved so much in recent years. So why is hate against trans people still so tolerated?

Less than 24 hours after California Assemblyman Tim Donnelly announced he would be pulling his child out of public school in response to a law guaranteeing transgender students the right to safely use the bathroom, Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old fashion marketing student and transgender woman, was brutally beaten outside a police precinct in New York City earlier this month. Transgender Rights on "To the Contrary"

It was a great show, but they did let Jennifer Marshall talk about how +Paul McHugh  Paul McHugh from +Johns Hopkins University stopped doing SRS years ago, because they did not make lives better. And no one contradicted her. Sad!!

Ms LAVERNE COX - ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK July 11th ON NETFLIX

She's a Boy I Knew (2007)

Using interviews, animation, old family footage, and voice mail, Vancouver filmmaker Gwen Haworth documents her male-to-female gender transition partially through the voices of her anxious but loving family, best friend, and wife. Calling for a new era of DIY transgender self-representation, Haworths feature debut is a comic, heartbreaking, and uplifting autobiography that breaks away from the marginalized depictions of transsexuals that populate mainstream media and focuses on the interpersonal relationships of a family who unexpectedly find their bonds strengthening as they overcome their preconceptions of gender and sexuality.

Bash Back - Gay AntiChristian Terrorists

On Sunday Nov. 9, 2008 of a militant homosexual group disrupted a service at the Mount Hope Church which is described as a Pentecostal mega church in Lansing, Michigan. Distracting the church's security guards, several of the demonstrators stood and shouted, "It's okay to be gay" and "Jesus was a homo." Thirty members dressed in pink and black terrorist garb stormed into the sanctuary. Their antics included unfurling a rainbow flag from the balcony, setting off a fire alarm, and throwing fliers and condoms at the congregation. Two lesbians stormed the pulpit put on a lewd display in front of the families and their children. Security also discovered that members of the group were performing sex acts in the restroom. The church was vandalized, obscenities were shouted and worshippers were confronted. To add to the life endangering confusion and chaos the group pulled the fire alarm, also endangering the entire Lansing community as emergency personnel were diverted to a false fire.

All this was done in November of 2008.

The Zolas, 'Escape Artist'

In "Escape Artist," the new video from Canadian pop duo The Zolas, the band plays around with audience expectations about race, culture and sexuality. As frontman Zach Gray sings about his mysterious alter ego, a group of kids kick around their neighborhood, playing basketball, chatting up girls and passing the hours. One of them clearly feels like an outsider.
