Understanding Transgender Issues: Donna Rose's Story

I just found this link on Donna Rose's blog about HRC's and Donna's "Understanding Transgender Issues: Donna Rose's Story." I had heard that it was available for companies, but now I see we can see it too.

There is something about Donna that I just love. I am so glad I can see her video.

I have told this story several times, but here it goes again.

At my first SCC in 2005, I went to Donna's seminar titled "Yin & Yang: Finding Balance in Your T-Ness." I got there late because it was on Saturday morning and I had been up late the night before and I never do mornings well anyway. I stood in the back and listened to Donna summing up her presentation and answering questions. She was sitting in a chair and seemed so relaxed and confident. After the session was over, most of the folks lined up to say something, ask a question of her, and of course get a big hug. I really did not understand, but it was just totally obvious that they all loved her.

By the time the next SCC came around I had read her book " Wrapped in Blue: A Journey of Discovery " and knew her story and was impressed by it. I sat right down front, where I could make eye contact and just feel her presence. After it was over, I of course got in that line for a hug!. Now I could feel why they all lined up. After I told her this story, she gave me my hug and she said "You rock!" Now I know she said that to several of us, but it felt like it was just for me.

I know it is just the hormones but I still tear up whenever I think about Donna Rose. I will go to that seminar again this year. It is Saturday, September 23 at 3:35pm - 5:00pm in the Marietta room.

Hugs,

Vickie

Understanding Transgender Issues: Donna Rose's Story

Video

The term transgender refers to a broad range of people who experience and/or express their gender in different, sometimes non-traditional, ways. Transgender people often face challenges in coming out and living openly, particularly in the workplace.

Many people have questions about transgender issues. This training video for corporate leaders presents the compelling personal story of Donna Rose, a well-known author, speaker and advocate on transgender and transsexual issues. Rose is an active member of the Human Rights Campaign's Board of Directors and Business Council. Her website, www.donnarose.com , is also a well-known source of information and support for and about the transgender community.

Hello everyone,

Kimberli said I could introduce her to the group. I have been so excited to meet her. She has done things that I had only heard about, but never met anyone who had actually done them.

I got an email from Kim as webmistress of the Tvals site. She explained that she is a TS-woman who had been stealth for 20 years. She has told virtually no one that she is trans in this whole time, but her husband. She just thought it was time to leave her self imposed "closet" and meet her sisters and brothers. I had lunch with her Wednesday and it was wonderful. We hit it off right away.

The strangest part of all this is that she lives just 1.5 miles from my house.

The only other person that I know of that she has reached out to, in all these years, was Lynn Conway. She said they were both in Chicago at the same time and they had dinner together. This woman is college educated, married to a man, that works in Nashville, has 4 adopted children, and has a great job, where she can work at home from a laptop and a phone.

Lynn Conway was so impressed that she asked Kim to write a page for her TS Successes site. Her profile on Lynn's site has her picture and tells her whole story.

As I write this the whole U of M website is down, I hope it is back up when you get this email. If Lynn's site is still down when you get this you can read the PDF I uploaded to the groups file section. (I just happened to have it still open in a Firefox tab on my iMac which has PDF creation as part of the operating system. I sure was ready for this.)

Kim is really excited to meet us all and get to know us. I just hope you all will be at least 1/2 as excited to meet her as I have been. I know you all will give her, and all our new people, a worm welcome.

Hugs,

Vickie

Sam de Brito on cross-dressing

Angus “Andrea” Grieve-Smith, the trans blogger, found this series of articles by the Australian Sam de Brito. It is so funny and touching and shows a lot of understand for the transsexuals plight. (The stuff on Nick Lowe is just dumb, but please follow the 4 links. They are worth reading.)

Sam de Brito on cross-dressing

Metafilter featured this interesting blog sponsored by the Sydney Morning Herald (and apparently named after this Nick Lowe song). The guy may be a jerk, but he’s got some valuable insights, I think. He did one of those “non-TG journalist cross-dresses for science!” pieces, which is more interesting than it might sound. I was also impressed with how sensitive he was to trans people. Also, he hooks up with a woman while cross-dressed, which (although not unheard of), is pretty cool.

(Bonus YouTube link in case you were wondering what Nick Lowe looks like when he’s really singing and playing - although I’ve never seen anyone play a bass with a pick before. The guitarist and drummer are pretty sharp too.)

It's All Because (The Gays Are Getting Married)

'I got an "F"!' says Christine Daniels

I got an "F"!

Right now I am looking at a priceless piece of paper I just pulled from my wallet and unfolded. I am thinking of having it laminated, or framed, or both, although a frame might make it a tad too bulky for my handbag.

"INTERIM DRIVERS LICENSE" it says at the top.

"CHRISTINE MICHELLE DANIELS" it says a few lines below.

And then, finally, the moment I've been waiting for, for as long as I was old enough to dream impossible dreams:

"SEX: F"

I got my "F"! Yesterday, at long last, I got the grade I always wanted.

It began with a lot of paperwork. I needed a document proving I had undergone a legal name change, which required six weeks to process, including a legal notice that had to be published in a newspaper one day a week for four consecutive weeks.
